Bottled water is surely one of the biggest jokes ever played on humanity. With plentiful supplies of clean water, first world countries still spends a horrifying amount of money on boutique water — some sourced from half-way around the globe.

The image above is but a piece of a stunning infographic from Online Education detailing the damaging effects of bottled water on our planet — and wallets. Check out the full image after the jump below:

Wow– it’s really scary to hear that bottled water isn’t tested as well as tap water! It’s ironic that people often buy bottled water because they think tap water isn’t safe. It’s also incredible how much oil is required to make the plastic.

Was sold on tap water before, now doubly sold! Why anyone would buy bottled water instead of having a filter on the tap is puzzling, too, if you’re that worried about having water cleaner than tap water.

I never realized that much oil was needed to produce bottled water! And not to mention all that plastic that bottled water comes in! It’s also staggering how many Americans consume bottled water — more reason for us to spread the word about living green and specifically, choosing tap water and ditching the bottle!

The amount of oil it takes to produce the plastic use for so many plastic water bottles each year is unbelievable. There are enviormentally-friendly, alternative plastic products that are made with PLA (polylactic acid), which is a resin made from corn starch. PLA is used to make clear, compostable containers and PLA lining is used in cups and containers as an impermeable liner. PLA is biodegradable, and fully compostable. It uses 65 percent less energy to produce than conventional oil-based plastics, generates 68 percent fewer greenhouse gasses and contains no toxins. These products are a great alternative to many oil-based plastics.
