It came to my attention that there are reusable sandwich bags on the market. In fact, the picture above is from this site. This is an interesting product. I would ask if it was really necessary. I mean, my Ziploc bags are reusable because I wash and dry them after I use them. So are Tupperware containers that I use.
But, I do like this idea. Anything to get away from the single use disposable products. What do you all think?
(I will warn you that their site isn’t very well designed and is hard to read, at least on Firefox)

I love buying reusable lunch bags at etsy. They’re cloth, usually, but they work just as well as plastic bags and can be tossed in with the laundry to be kept clean. Plus, I get to satisfy my dorky love of patterned fabrics by using them!

That is a really cool idea. Normal plastic bags do not hold up that well and can only be washed so much. I am going to look into either these or cloth ones like Mo stated.

I tried using reusable sandwich containers from Tupperware in my kids’ lunch boxes. They were inevitably lost. I tried reusing ziploc sandwich bags. Too much of a pain to rewash. Either way, my kids would invariably fail to bring the containers back home (throw away, lose, or just plain forget), or it was just too much of a hassle to keep them clean.
Then I found compost-able, biodegradable cellulose sandwich bags at green home: http://dgs.greenhome.com/products/kitchen/compostable_goods/113200/
The kids can just throw them away. The bags will break down in the trash and I don’t have to worry about my kids remembering to bring the containers back home.

Check out a product called Dajo Green Reusable Sandwich and Snack Bags. Much more durable than the plastic bags and because they are soft, no problem with packing like the tupperware containers. Pretty cool! http://www.dajobags.com

I’ve been using these for my sandwiches for years and love them! They’re cloth on the outside and a non-leeching plastic on the inside. I also just discovered these for snacks (I bring almonds to work). I don’t like plastic bags or tupperware because of the leeching. I use glass for most things (pyrex, frigoverre), but for sandwiches, I find that these are more convenient and won’t break.

I have started using “wrap n mat” from http://www.bangalla.com and these are just fantastic. The kids love the designs and they really keep the bread fresh. I even tested it by making a sandwich and left it over the weekend and on Monday the bread was a fresh as it was on Friday (not so sure about the cheese however so it was not eaten).

There’s a new company out of Northwest. Check out http://www.ReUsies.com. We love their bags and they’ve become a fashion statement for my kids at school.

These sandwich containers are still plastic -they have a thin coating of PVC, that can never be recovered for recycling. When you read the ingredients consider if it is recoverable. This container is essentially the same as using saran type wrap. Save your money and the planet and your children’s health.
Did everyone forget about waxed paper? It takes longer than regular paper but will compost in the garbage dump (most likely anaerobically in the municipal dump rather than aerobically in your own compost bin.) Sometimes our grandparents ways were better than our plastic ways.
