I used only furoshiki last year and printed out cards with this image (which is a quick-reference on how to use them) on one side and on the other something along the lines of “two gifts in one! use this the next time you wrap a gift”. They’re pretty expensive (which is why, in Japan, it’s traditional to return the furoshiki to the giver) but if you know how to sew in straight lines, it’s easy to make your own out of colorful fabric (which is easy to buy in bulk if you know where to look). They most often come in two sizes, but I’ve had success making tiny ones for tiny things (I wrapped a bottle of ink in one about 6 inches on a side).

I’m definitely going to do it again this year, although I’ve not yet bought the fabric. I have learned that I require more fabric than I think I will. Decorative/vintage napkins may also be used as furoshiki (they’re not supposed to be square, even though they’re close, so artisan napkins may work better). I encourage everyone to use furoshiki and reusable ribbons!
