Filter For Good Earth Day Giveaway

britaThe good folks at Brita have given Groovy Green two sets of a Nalgene Bottle and a Faucet Filtration System to give away to our readers in celebration of earth day, and as a part of their FilterForGood Pledge.

How to win: Leave a brief comment letting us know what you plan to do this Earth Day, and make sure that you tell us your email address (Email addresses are not posted online from the WordPress comment form, only the editors will see them.) Two lucky readers will be chosen at random from the comments.

Also, check out FilterForGood.com today!. Take their pledge to avoid bottle water and use a refillable container.

Americans send about 38 billion water bottles a year to landfills.1 Considering the 1.5 million barrels of oil needed to make those bottles, the environmental impact of plastic bottle waste is truly staggering.2

That’s why Brita and Nalgene have teamed up to create the FilterForGood pledge. It’s a simple commitment to reduce your personal waste by giving up bottled water, even if it’s just a few days each week. Together, filtered water and a reusable bottle are an ideal solution for going green at home and on the go. It’s an easy change that can make a big difference.

I haven’t planned anything officially yet, but I think we’ll make a trip to the recycling bin, and maybe plant some flowers with the kids.

And keep the lights off until it’s completely dark out!

This earth day I’m making a nice big vegan dinner, if the weather permits I plan on eating out side. And working on my vegetable garden. I’m planning on getting rid of as much lawn as possible over the next few years, and replace it with native plants, and edible land scape.

I’ll be doing some planting, getting my organic garden going. I’ll also be talking in depth with my children and neighbors about what we can do for our earth. We will discuss what we can do with our grey water, and what systems we might be able to set up to move it to where we need it. Along with this, there will be no t.v. that day, we’ll all check the house and make sure things are unplugged that aren’t in use, and we’re going to cook everything at the fire pit. Board games at twilight by candlelight, and bicycles instead of cars for the day, well, it’s a start.

    Check it out;

It’s wonderful to give up the wastefulness of bottled water in favor of tap water. But Clorox’s FilterForGood campaign is a bit disingenuous, as the plastic Brita filter cartridges are not recyclable or refillable in North America.

Please join the campaign and sign the petition at http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/recycle-used-brita-water-filter-cartridges.html to urge Clorox to take responsibility for the millions of plastic Brita filter cartridges that are landfilled or incinerated each year, as is already being done by the Brita company in Europe!

For more information, please visit our site at http://www.takebackthefilter.org.

And please spread the word. Clorox has already contacted us about this campaign, so it’s working to get their attention. We need all the signatures and letters to Brita/Clorox that we can get!

Our family went to the city’s “Go Green” festival… We’re speding earth day planting new trees and perennials, and installing a rain collection barrel! We also spent this weekend replacing our old chemical cleaners with Shaklee all natural cleaners. We also bought smart strips for our 3 media centers in our home. The kids (ages 2 & 4) already know so much about not being ‘wasteful’!

I am going to go green today…from today I am going to only use reusable bags for shopping and do the plastics, paper, cans recycling. Also, I plan to buy indoor plant today (I don’t have a outdoor garden) while I am grocery shopping and buy organic foods. I have already started using less electricity & water. Today is our 2nd Marriage anniversary and it’s also another reason my husband and I want to use this wonderful time of our life to make changes in the right direction . Hopefully it’ll be a start as a small step towards keeping our dear earth a more nice place to live in and a welcoming place for our future children.

I love this idea, even if the filters aren’t recycleable here yet.

No specific Earth Day plans here. We make a general effort year round to control our electricity use. We garden, compost and recycle. But of course, we’ll be talking to the kids about what it all means and why it matters.

I am amazed at how novel the idea of a tap filter for drinking water is in the western world. Here in India it is so common as to be part of most households. It certainly is part of mine. This earth day i shall do as i do everyday, in the interest of thrift, not so much to save the planet i have to admit: Switch off whatever electrical items i do not need, recycle, try not to waste anything etc etc.

Not much will change today. My family and I are avid recycler’s. From beer cans, to V-8 can’s. We save the tabs for our friends Mother, who’s church turns them in. We recycle our left over can’s and use the money “cha-ching” . . . .
    To go camping!!!!!

Our city has curb side recycling, so much of our recycle goes into the bins.

Will probably have a nice cold beer, rinse the can, pull the tab and think about another adventure our camping on our recycled cans.

My grandchildren are huge recyclers…the oldest being ten years old..all 4 of them put in a good bit of hours work each week towards recycling.

Every day is “Earth Day” is my house because I instruct all members of my family(my DH and three sons) to reduce, reuse and recycle. We turn off lights while leaving rooms, we reuse grey water to flush the toilet, I wash only full loads of laundry and dishes and buy eco friendly dish and laundry detergents. I have recycled for more than 15 years–before it became fashionable. If I can’t recycle I try to find another use for an item. I honestly can say I am the greenest person I know.

We also recycle everything! We bring our recycling home from work to put into our bins at home.

My coworker and I have also started to recycle paper at work, as it was all just going in the trash. Now we are putting less trash in the dumps, and recyling paper!!

Hi. I plan to expand my garden this year and to learn more about no-till gardening. I started gardening a couple of years ago when we finally moved from a small apartment with no balcony or patio to a small house with a yard. The first couple of years I focused on observing my space and learning more about growing our own food. Now that I have a couple of years under my belt, I’m looking into more natural ways of improving the garden. A big focus for this year will be on ‘companion planting’. I hope that by planing veggies that help eachother grow near eachother that I’ll get better results. Also, planting this way can reduce insects and disease, which many people use chemicals to treat. I also learned that our local foodbank accepts fresh fruit/veggie donations and that this is a great way to share the garden yield with the community.

Today I am going to the recycling center to deposit all the plastic bottles, aluminum cans, office paper, etc. Already I have added insulation to my house, changed out the light bulbs to CFLs and placed an insulation blanket around the hot water heater. I will try to remember to bring the reusable bags to the market. I put some in both cars. I will stop using the clothes dryer now that the weather is warmer. And doing some composting for the garden. I am also walking more and biking to work. Good exercise!

I am trying to save the money for the numerous bags that I use at the grocery, but I try to take the two that I do have, but I always feel bad becuase I have to use more anyway. I plan to spend this Great Anniversary Day with my family in the countryside, where we will look and enjoy the Mother Nature, listen birds songs and each other.
