I’m just as shocked as you are. No matter how many positive steps the Big W has taken in the last year or so, I’ve always remained somewhat skeptical over their true committment to sustainability. Finding out that Al Gore will address executives at Wal-Mart’s Quarterly Conference On Sustainability was almost as amazing as discovering that Wal-Mart has a Quarterly Conference on Sustainability. Did I mention that it’s quarterly? Say what you will about Wal-Mart’s environmental record in the past, but they’re quickly showing the rest of corporate America the ropes on going ‘green’.
From the article, “Gore will speak on global warming, the subject of his recently released documentary “An Inconvenient Truth.” The conference is an outgrowth of Wal-Mart’s mission, outlined by Chief Executive Lee Scott last November, to minimize its negative impact on the environment. At the time, Wal-Mart committed to, among other things, reduce energy use in its stores, improve the fuel efficiency of its truck fleet and substantially cut down on solid waste produced by its stores.”
Now, obviously, Wal-Mart is attempting every angle to help bolster it’s negative public image in various business practives. The environmental shift is one avenue to gaining points. For example, Wal-Mart has “outfitted its trucks with an alternative power unit that uses 90% less fuel than its engines do while idling. The company created 14 internal networks to explore and implement more environmentally sound business practices. The 14 groups, made up of both Wal-Mart executives and outside experts, focus on different business areas, including operations and logistics, food and agriculture, textiles, global greenhouse gas and jewelry and mining.”
So, hey, Wal-Mart has the balls to push this issue. Where is the rest of Corporate America? AOL: Where’s you’re Conference on Sustainability? Hey McDonalds, what are you up to? Hey Whole Foods, um, keep up the good work!

On the subject of Whole Foods, it’s being revealed that their CEO Mackey has been funneling corporate profits from Whole Foods into the “global warming is a hoax” right wing think tank Cato Institute. Cato provides the Junk Science content for FOX, which regularly runs “global warming is only liberal hysteria” articles and interviews. Bad, Whole Foods, Bad!!
You can read the about the Cato Institute at Common Dreams and at the original source Corporate Crime Reporter Sigh. So needless to say I’ve emailed my displeasure (no response) and I’m not shopping there until their CEO gets canned. Cheers!!
