How to: Be a Green Hotel Guest

Green Hotel RoomWhen travelling, you can be a green hotel guest in multiple ways:

1. Be a guest in a Green Hotel.

2. Be a Green Guest in a hotel.

3. Be a Green Guest in a Green Hotel.

Charity Guide recently outlined details on how to accomplish this. First, find a hotel that is part of the Green Hotels Association. These hotels are properties whose managers are eager to institute programs that save water, save energy and reduce solid waste. As I searched for a hotel in my home state, I was pleasantly surprised to find several.  The Colony Hotel & Cabana Club in Delray Beach even has an environment section on their website. That takes care of #1 mentioned above.

For #2, being a green guest at a “regular” hotel, the article recommends that guests speak to the hotel managers to encourage them to adopt green practices and provide them with recommendations on how to get started. Finally, contact the CEO of the hotel with the same information.

Now, to continue on with #2, and also #3, Charity Guide recommends that you bring along safety pins with a different colored bead on each, a marker, a coffee mug, and a nightlight. Why is that? Have you ever requested that the hotel doesn’t wash your towels, only to not have a clue which one belongs to who when ready for the next shower? That’s what the color-coded safety pins are for (I call the green one!). The marker: to write names on plastic cups, if you must use them. The mug: Obvious use, I believe! And the nightlight? This would be in place of keeping a light on all night…if that is necessary.

The article has many more tips, including thanking the hotel management for practicing green business. Check it out!

I recently stayed at a hotel that washed my towels every day. I was aghast. Thanks for the tip about how to communicate my concerns to management.

    I call the red one!

[...] Last month I wrote about being a green hotel guest. Then, I took an unplanned trip in which I stayed in the Holiday Inn Express in Frederick, MD. I was disappointed in several areas, and wrote the management upon my return home. I figured that I would not complain publicly if they contacted me directly to resolve the issue. No contact has been made. The following is my complaint letter, sent to the hotel email address. I  recently stayed in this Holiday Inn Express with my husband (details excluded). I would like to tell you about my disappointment during my stay. We placed the “Privacy Please” on the door, because we did not want the room cleaned. I also called the front desk to let them know that we would not be needing service that day. [...]
