Blog Action Day: Hu Says China To Go Green

chinesepollute.jpgIts well known that China has been growing at an amazing/alarming rate economically speaking. But this growth has also led to devastating effects on the Chinese environment. 500 million people in that country lack clean drinking water. Less than 1% of the urban population breathe air considered healthy by EU standards. And cancer from pollution seems to be the national number one cause of death.

The leaders of China met every five years to organize the goals and efforts of that country. They’re doing so right now and President Hu has already made this statement. “We will increase spending on energy and the environment conservation with the focus on intensifying prevention and control of water, air and soil pollution… We will enhance our capacity to respond to climate change and make new contributions to protecting the global climate.”

It’s worth noting though that he gave no specific policy measures towards these ends.  And like the US, China continues to resist international pressure to instigate mandatory greenhouse gas reduction plans.  Will China really follow the path towards a cleaner, healthier future?
