Denver International Airport is in the middle of nowhere; a flat expanse that lies perfectly situated to track the sun and take advantage of renewable power. It was announced today that MMA Renewable Ventures LLC and WorldWater & Solar Technologies Corp. will build a 2 mega-watts solar array on the site that will generate more than 3.5 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually. It is expected to reduce carbon emissions by more than 5 million pounds a year. From the article,
“Designed and installed by WorldWater, the new ground mounted tracking solar array system will be located at the entrance to DIA’s main terminal. The system will be financed by MMA, which will own and operate the system and sell power to DIA under a long-term contract. DIA said last week it had been negotiating a 25-year, $10.9 million contract to purchase power from the system.
‘By purchasing clean power rather than solar panels, DIA will benefit from a renewable energy system that is cost-effective from the day it becomes operational and for years to come,’ said Matt Cheney, CEO of MMA.”
A great development for DIA. Hit the jump for more.

Its a good idea to put solar powered planles at DIA. They would save loads of money and we would also save alot of naturl resorses

DIA will be paying for this anyway there is no benefit for DIA rather than the clean energy.
Instead of solar power which is a huge investment.
DIA can use water power.
Think about it!

Metin,
DIA can use water power? Been to Colorado lately? There’s NO WATER POWER because thanks to the tree huggers there are NO DAMS. Colorado gets 84% of its energy from coal and 3% from hydro.

“It is expected to reduce carbon emissions by more than 5 million pounds a year.” Typical ‘green’ double-speak. No mention of the tons of arsenic to make the silicon cells, nor the tons of glass required, the tracking systems and computers to drive that, no mention of the frailty of the system to a hail storm… not even mention that on a cloudy day we do not have the technology to store ANY grid power so ya gotta have the coal plants on the side anyway…oh, and never mind that it is not likely to last more that 10-15 years. So what is the TRUE environmental impact of this boondoggle? Er, except to get some commissioner re-elected?

Wow Detlef, that’s both harsh and untrue…
If you dont think their is a positive ROI on this kind of project, both financially (which we as consumers and the owners and users of this airport benefit from) and environmentally because frankly that is a substantial amount of power being generated without any additions to the brown cloud, you need to either smoke a lot more, or stop, or switch to something stronger… not sure which. So nearsighted. Oh well, can’t please some people any of the time I guess. No… wait your right, if mccain is elected I vote we build the first nuclear plant in your neighborhood instead, that makes much more sense… duh
