Titanic Being Recycled, Turned Into Watches

titanic_watch.jpg

We’re all for reuse and recycle, but Romain Jerome’s Titanic DNA Watch is borderline macabre/bizarre. Granted, we really dig the design — but taking actual steel from the titanic and incorporating it into a watch? From the release,

“The watches will have black dial faces thanks to lacquer paint, the ingredients of which consist of coal from the Titanic, while pieces of steel from the vessel will also be used in their creation.

Yvan Arpa, Chief Executive of Romain Jerome, revealed that the number of watches made will be limited to 2,012, to coincide with the centenary anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic, when it struck an iceberg on its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York on April 14th 1912.”

We’re pretty sure these things are not going to be cheap; but if you can’t afford the Heart of the Ocean, this might be your next best bet. Hit the jump for more.

thats not right that you guys are taking steel from the titanic just to make some lame watches that will be soon thrown away because its old or out of style that is taking history and distroying it your making it disapear let it be known for what it is and its story and not by what it was made from or the price . You are damaging the real thing with a story thats good enough in instead of taking parts away from it to celebrate the anniversary as you say or is it just to make MONEY? I cant explain how wrong that is. I want to see the real titanic…not a watch. dissapointing

I thought there was a treaty to prevent people from going near the titanic…this is probably illegal. If not, it’s still a big mistake; the titanic is something that should be respected and left in peace. It shouldn’t be used as a money-making stunt. i can’t believe this article, i really hope it’s a joke.

It isn’t a joke – I’ve seen advertisements and articles about it in watch magazines for months.

I also doubt these watches will be “thrown away” by purchasers. It’s aimed towards watch collectors who certainly wouldn’t do that. I don’t really see it as much different than when people buy small pieces of stone/steel/etc from landmarks. And at least it’s innovative.

You cant just take steel from the greatest and most famous ship on the planet and put it in a watch that dose not compliment the ship itself.Parts have been taken from the ship before and it wasn’t right then. The ship deserves to be left alone in peace!!! The ship is not a scrap yard, its a grave yard.Over 800 people went down with the ship and plus the watch is ugly too.The ship should be respected. This should not be aloud.

I think that it is pretty cool. This was simply a ship people. Metal does not have a soul. The only thing you would be disturbing are the fish. The ship is and will continue to be respected whether it’s there or spontaneously disappears. You don’t need a physical object to have respect for something. And what a good way to constanly remind people of what happened, in each instance they go to check the time.

They have to get the steel up from the bottom of the ocean in “pieces” because they will NEVER get it up any other way. When that ship sunk, it was meant to stay sunk. Making watches out of it is the best that they ever be able to do with with that metal. Personally, I wouldn’t want to wear a watch made from a vessel that was damned to destruction and the grave of hundreds of people. I think it’s a very morbid and desperate act to make money. To me, the Titanic is a symbol of defeat, destruction, death, and it holds the stories of hundreds of people who were a bunch of ignorant, high-minded, biggots who thought they were better than other people. They even thought they were as high as God, but the truth was clear when that ship sank. They were nothing but fools. It’s SAD, very sad and I would never wear a such a morbid piece of jewelry. I agree with those who are saying that it’s wrong. The Titanic is nothing to respect or honor. It was a dishonorable vessel. Many people died that didn’t have to die, but it happened because of biggotry, ignorance and hate. Is that what we want to honor and respect? Think again. Let Liverpool honor it, it was their vessel.

  15. Michal said,

They could made these watches without having a piece of steel form the vessel – nobody would see the difference between steel taken from Titanic or any other old ship (or any piece of old steel in general)…
If they decided not to produce a ‘fake’, 2012 pcs of watches need relatively small amount of steel – 100 pounds?
Thousands of pounds lie scattered around the ship (including dishes and so on :)
Also, be sure steel from any onshore disaster (planes, trains, WTC) was recycled. Mostly not in such nice and quality watches but in rails etc…
Finally you should understand pieces incorporated in the watches are symbolic – they just underline the fact watches are released as an centenary anniversary souvenir…

You young boys and girls who spelled their complaints with too many exclamation marks, and excessive use of capital letters should be ashamed of how stupid you made yourselves look.

That aside, I happen to know the more scientific side of the Titanic’s current condition. Recent estimates produced by those studying the vessel say that the metal-eating bacteria around the ship will completely dissolve the hull in a decade or two. I even visited the Titanic Exhibition in Las Vegas, and there’s all the proof you need that we’re trying to preserve the ship before it is lost forever. In it’s current state, it won’t last much longer.

Making a watch out of the hull is no more morbid than collecting the coal around it and selling it in gift shops. However, the purpose of this watch was to commemorate the ship before it’s gone forever. People who spend hundreds or thousands of dollars for this watch won’t be spending the money because it looks pretty. (there’s nothing unique about it’s design) They will be buying it in memory of the ship and all those lost with it.

Furthermore, the watch is not being made directly from the hull. The Titanic is a protected underwater museum and historical memorial. The fragment of the hull I saw in Las Vegas was a broken fragment of the ship that was cast aside as the ship sank. By law they aren’t allowed to tamper with the ship itself, but there’s nothing wrong with preserving a fragment that broke off. Just like in that exhibit, these watches are being made from metal fragments cast out from the ship as it sank, and the coal they gather had also fallen off the ship. The ship itself wasn’t tampered with, cut, drilled, or excavated. So you all just made yourselves look stupid.

I think this watch is a wonderful idea, and I truly am sorry for the passangers, no matter how biggotted they may have been to the lower classes. They were still people. I know of a certain Colonel John Weir, who was passanger on that ship. He was booked to sail with a different ship, but there was a coal strike and he wasn’t able to get on board that one. So he switched his ticket to the Titanic, and died in the tragic accident. He’d served in the Spanish-American War as a respected soldier, and retired in Scotland. There was no need for his death. It was all a tragic accident that he changed his ticket and boarded the ship that was doomed to lose so many lives on April 14th, 1912. No matter what you think of the “higher class”, they were still people. For all you know, it could have been your ancestors on board.

So I am glad that they are taking scraps from the ship before the ship is lost to the bacterial damage. What will happen in thirty years when the Titanic no longer exists? Will you morons still complain that we are desecrating a tomb, or will you complain that we didn’t do enough to preserve it? I personally believe we should do everything in our power to preserve it.

This watch is a good idea, and I’d like to go purchase one. I will not throw it away, and I don’t think those who died mind. (if there is a heaven) I bet they’re thrilled that 90-100 years after their death we still remember them. I remember them. Do you?

If I had died that long ago, I would definitely want people to buy suveneirs commemorating my tragic death. After all, the only thing people really want in life it to be noticed, and remembered.

    I remember.

Good for them if rich people want to spend money on a stupid watch. I respect the people that died but i couldn’t give a damn about a piece of garbage that is poluting the ocean, its just scrap metal that will degrade anyway. It will never be brought to the surface, it’s too expensive if not impossible. they want to make money, yes, but after all our whole world revolves arround it, we are all part of it whether we want it or not. If we should leave it alone then we should never have gone searching for it. we should care about other things that are more important, it’s just a shipwreck, not a grave, the remains are long gone and if someone wants to make whatches, let them recicle all that metal, ask me if i care….may their souls rest in peace.

The watches dont even look related to the Titanic. Its really sad that these people are ignoring the fact that they are stealling history. They are Basically rich people trying to cover up the fact that theyre GRAVE ROBBERS trying to steal history. They’re robbing a giant grave. Those people are completely obliviouse to the fact that theyre invading probably ancient realics of the past which should either go to the family realtives or stay in the place they are in. Im a huge Titanic fan and i would one day like to go and see it for my self, but i dont want to see it knowing that it was used as a scrap yard. This is not true, the metal used on this watch is the off cuts of metal from the boatyard were the titanic was made so it is not actually from the titanic under the ocean. The titanic has restrictions and is not allowed to be touched and never mind allowed to be turned into watches! Also the people that are also complaining about it polluting the ocean the titanic is a graveyard and should be left that way we should not disturb things like that. I also think the watch is a good idea as it is symbolic to the titanic.

The Titanic is an overrated historical event, one that is on par with the greatest disaster in mankinds history-ww2- the Titanic has no significant historical impact on society and in no way changed or shaped what has happened after its sinking. The only reason it is preserved, is that the media made a story about it;much greater events happened that did have significance. The Titanic is just a shipwreck not a grave. If people want to make watches out of a ship then its their perogative.

Oh my goodness. Okay, I’m only 12, but I have watched the film, and been to the museum, and seriously? It was the most heart wrenching thing ever. Hundreds of people died on that ship, technically, if this is true, you are making a watch out of a grave. It is disgusting. They would cost a lot, it will just stupid, money making scheme for greedy people. Seriously, this has just got me so worked up. It isn’t right. I just saw the film a few months ago and now I am really interested in it. I searched ‘Titanic’ hoping for a normal picture, because I wanted to see the real thing, and when I saw this I thought it was a sick joke, ‘Titanic being recycled’. It seriously is disgusting. The people behind this should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves. How would you like it if you died, and then people just thought, ‘Wow, that’s a landmark, I’ll make 2,000 watches out of it’. Huh? You wouldn’t like it would you? You wouldn’t just go up to the Statue of Liberty in New York, or Big Ben in London, and just start lobbing bits off it. So why do it to the Titanic, the most graceful ship ever built, just because it’s underwater and you can’t just go and see it everyday. Think about this, this whole thing is horrific, sick and horrendous.

I have to agree with most everyone on this watch. It is very disrespectful to the people who lost their lives there.
I will have to disagree with one comment made though, Titanic was not only a ship full of “stuck up” arrogant people that “deserved” what happened…and it was not them who died mostly, it was the poor innocent men, women and children who were trying to find a better life in America who were poor that died. Regardless of what a movie tells u, ppl did loose their lives, rich and stuck up and poor and hopeful, doesnt matter ppl DIED. But it was the ppl who were not as well off as the “upper class” that lost their lives mostly, NOT the rich.
As for this watch … the person who had this idea for one is out for one thing and that is money, period. U can NOT justify this any way, shape or form. And i would also like to point out the fact that this HAS to be a lie … for one, it would cost more money than they would make to even go to the bottom of the ocean to get the materials, not to mention the price of actually bringing this stuff to land, not only that … if they DID in fact retreive these materials it was illegal and they should be arrested.
Titanic, the sunken ship, where so many lost their lives, men women and children, should be left alone. I believe that it NOW is kind of like a head stone for all of these ppl, it is the only thing left to mark the place where they have died.
This watch is an insult to those ppl, and to be honest, anything brought up FROM the site is an insult UNLESS it was something that needed to be brought up from the wreckage.
But i can almost put my life savings, which isnt much but worth it, that this is a scam, and if not … i hope this person wake up in the middle of the night every night from nightmares feeling the way these ppl felt when they were loosing their lives knowing there was nothing that could change their fate … that they were going to die. Maybe then this person will realize that Titanic is no joke or money making pile of scrap, it is Titanic, the place where men, women and children died in a horrific and terrifing way, no more no less.
    Sorry if i mispelled anything :P <3

I would say because people died with the titanic and your not gonna stop it from polluting out earth. we should pull it out this is just for money. if you make watches out of the titanic you are relly disrespectful to the people who died that day.

I’m glad to see so many people saying this is wrong. Now I like the look of the watch but I loath and detest the idea behind it. Titanic was a tragedy, the ship is a graveyard for hundreds of people. How dare this man defile a grave, it may be a historic icon but the ship is still a grave and I see no difference between earning profit from grave robbing and earning profit from “incorporating” the ship into a watch.
I can’t believe that this is legal, even if the ship is now protected, people should never have been allowed to buy parts of it in the first place, let alone take said parts and turn them into tasteless watches. Taking apart a piece of timeless history so that a few materialistic people can say “oh look, I’m WEARING a piece of THE Titanic.”
It’s so morally wrong and I hope anyone who condones this watch or buys this watch can live with their own conscience!

Wow, I’m surprised at everyone on this forum. Apparently half of the comments on here are “yelling” at this forum to stop the watch production. In case no one realized, this is a event that this web site decided to post because its a clever way of recycling, this site is not affiliated in anyway with the production of this watch.

With that in mind lets review that yelling L E A V E TITANIC ALONE! in all caps (rashel ,
August 13, 2009 at 5:52 pm) will not do any good. Unless the company who is in charge of making the watches decide to take a peek at this site. Even if that happens, their more than likely going to make the watch. So thanks for wasting a post.

I personally feel that this is a good idea. Its a way to have a piece of history. For the dingbats and knuckle heads who actually think metal is going to be taken from the wreckage….Your Wrong its a piece that has either washed up or was moved to a place far away from the wreck by ocean currents. Why not recycle a piece that washed ashore, it most likely would end up in some collectors hands. why not give the public a chance to have some history

The story of the Titanic has touched me and many other people. And they are taking apart a piece of history that should be left alone. And especially because it is not just a wreak it is a grave for over 1700 people. I think the only reason they should bring somthing up from the wreak is to put it into a museum, not to make money.

This is so wrong! This site should be treated and reviered in the same way as the Arizona. People died in this disaster and I for one would not have any thing from this disaster in my home. Anything to make money! Shame on these people, I do not care if it was 1912 or 2009 it is not right to use any part of this disaster for financial gain. Poor MR. Balard must be having a fit.
