Australian Government To Phase Out Sale Of Incandescents

snipshot_b21eqte1kso6.jpgWe’ve heard news of California considering a ‘ban the bulb’ type approach with favoring efficient compact fluorescents over their energy-wasting incandescent counterparts, but now comes news that the entire country of Australia is enacting legislation to do the same thing.

The plan calls for the standard household bulb, the incandescent, (which wastes 95% of the energy it uses), to be phased out within three years! The move is termed as a ‘practical approach’ to Australia’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. It is estimated that energy used for household lighting in Australia ‘contributes up to 12 per cent of coal-energy greenhouse gas emissions and around 25 per cent of emissions from commercial and public lighting.’ If the Aussies switch to CFL bulbs, they’ll reduce their emissions by almost 800,000 tons a year by 2012.

According to the article, the government will work with major manufacturers and importers to bring about the change. They will also work with state and territory governments to introduce new efficiency lighting standards for building codes and other regulations.

Bold moves, right? While this announcement is still just that, here’s to hoping that such a strong position becomes law. There’s no reason we should still be selling a light bulb that wastes so much energy. Can anyone else think of something as old and inefficient as an incandescent that is still a major part of society? Oh wait, the internal-combustion engine…Oh well.

I figure incandescents are useful for areas where the light isn’t on for long at a time, like the fridge light, toilet light and so on. Perhaps education and carbon tax is a better way to encourage the use of . Wouldn’t compact fluorescents be inefficent in these areas due to the large start up current?

Boy, combustible engines are dangerous! How can they still be a major part of society?? KABOOM!!

Ohhh wait, you must have meant internal-combustion engines. Hopefully the engines we use in cars and trucks today aren’t combustible. That would be bad. :-)

    Andrew,

Thanks for spotting that. There was a period of time when my brain was pretty sure ‘combustible engine’ was the correct term. Idiot.
