Eco Fashion Q&A: Who’s Got Green Jeans? |

After a week of being sick with a nasty sinus cold, I’m happy to be back on my green fashion beat. This week’s question comes from Chris: How about some choices for blue jeans? Fair Trade – Organic?
Well, we have stumbled upon my favorite subject: denim. I’m one of those folks that can’t have too many pairs of jeans. Of course, these days, I do not buy any denim that isn’t eco-friendly, whether it be made of sustainable materials, fair trade/sweatshop free, or vintage.
When it comes to “green” denim choices, there are more than just a few! Researching companies for this post, I easily complied a list of over 30 brands; some just for men and others are ladies’ only. So, without furthur ado, here is that list:
Mens and Womens
* Edun
* Loomstate
* Howies
* Rawganique
* Levi’s Eco
* HUG
* Kuyichi
* Bread Denim
* Certified Jeans
* EBlood Clothing
* Komodo
* Ideo
* Hemper Jeans
* Machja
* Mission Playground
* Of The Earth
* Sling and Stones
Mens Only
* Hempest
* IPath
* Planet Earth Green Label
* Justice Clothing
* Grn Apple Tree
* Livity
* No Sweat Apparel
* Satori Movement
* Swirlspace
Womens Only
* Del Forte
* Linda Loudermilk
* Carol Young/Undesigned
* Anna Cohen
* Grace & Cello
* Oqoqo
Organic cotton and hemp are the most common fabrics for green denim, though we can’t forget the joys of vintage blues as well. Often much more affordable than newly-manufactured eco-denim, vintage jeans also present the delicious option of being truly unique; tis pretty hard for someone to have the same pants when they are over 20 years old.
If you still have a pair of jeans that are in pretty good condition, check out the Q&A post from last week that features denim repair tips.
Chris, I hope this list-tastic post helped to answer your question pretty throughly. As usual, if our great readers have anything to add about green denim options, make sure to leave your thoughts in the comment section.
Make sure to keep the eco-fashion questions coming!

I have hemp jeans from Patagonia (www.patagonia.com).

Patagonia carries an organic cotton jean as well. Right now I only see it in Men’s styling on their site.(Search “denim” on http://www.patagonia.com) Last year they had a “high wire” denim line made of hemp and post consumer polyester. They don’t seem to carry them anymore. We have a couple of pairs that are very nice. You can still find them now and again on E-bay, for great prices. (Try searching “Patagonia” with “denim”, “jeans”, “hemp” or “high wire”.)

Looking into organic jeans you will find that many companies will be using Organic Cotton, but that is as far as it goes. Many of the dyes and washes (most are very toxic) used are not sustainable. It is very hard to find true “green jeans”! Do your homework on a company before purchasing, if you are looking for something without toxic chemicals.

Jen – I didn\’t see any jeans made from hemp on the Patagonia site, though they do have a men\’s jacket on sale made from hemp denim.
Mia – you\’re right, but I had to search for \”jeans\” instead of \”denim\” to find the 98% organic cotton men\’s jeans they offer.
Michael – I\’m happy to hear that you enjoyed it
Creed – you make a very good point; one that many often overlook. Worker conditions and chemicals used on the fabric are just as important as the fabric itself.

The Patagonia “jeans” I have are more like a denim khaki’s if that makes any sense. I have 3 pair and, as you would expect form a rock climbing supplier, they are tough as nails while being 1/4 the weight of, say, Carharts and infinitely more breathable. Big Fan!

[...] Are your blue jeans green? I’ll admit. Mine aren’t. However, I gotta tell you I object to being sold ANY style of jeans like this. Can’t you wear a shirt and sell jeans at the same time? [...]

I had never heard of “Green Jeans” until I read this article. What a great idea! Jeans are something almost everyone wears so it could make a big difference if everyone wore eco-friendly denim instead of regular denim. It’s also great that there are so many options of eco-friendly brands. Sounds like a great idea!

now a days most of the denim company’s are high on the “ECO” stamp…. everyone claims to be using organic cotton now,…is quite amusing to me and at the same time frustrating because many of us buy that shit not realizing the shallowness of their concept…
The highly publicized use of organic cotton is one thing and dyeing it with synthetic and toxic chemical dyes is another…and then making the fabric under powerlooms is yet another which is responsible for loss and destruction to our environment.
We overlook the cruel consequences of our very own deeds!! Ignorance is bliss?? Just that we cant lose more time anymore!!
So guys my plea to you is to not fall for what they say on the surface! Dig a little deeper and u ll know for sure what the reality is and that will be truly protecting our environment at our own initiative rather that being told what to believe!!
Well I must share this with u guys……
This Is For Real!
Recently I came across this fascinating new collection, the first of its kind!! by GoIndigo Jeans made in India …
Not only the end product matters here but the Processes of growing cotton and weaving cloth, of extracting dyes, producing colour and dyeing the cloth are each given the excellence and traditional touch to each pair of jeans!!
The Jeans is made from pure organic cotton natural indigo dyed hand woven fabric.
I made a visit to that place and witnessed the traditional processes, the work ethics and the environment which was a true delight for me…, the workers looked happy too.. a rare view, in context with all the crisis that the textile industry suffers from today!
Here’s the link http://www.goindigojeans.com
Take a look!! And have a nice day!
