California Lawmaker Plans to Ban Incandescent Bulbs by 2012

MODERN_AQUA.jpgThis would be huge. I get a little “down” some times thinking that the environmental writers and blogs are just preaching to the choir. Then, once in a while something like this comes along and makes me believe that the memes that are kicked around in the blogosphere do make it to the public consciousness and yes, even to law makers.

A California lawmaker wants to make his state the first to ban incandescent lightbulbs as part of California’s groundbreaking initiatives to reduce energy use and greenhouse gases blamed for global warming.

The “How Many Legislators Does it Take to Change a Lightbulb Act” would ban incandescent lightbulbs by 2012 in favor of energy-saving compact fluorescent lightbulbs.

“Incandescent lightbulbs were first developed almost 125 years ago, and since that time they have undergone no major modifications,” California Assemblyman Lloyd Levine said on Tuesday.

“Meanwhile, they remain incredibly inefficient, converting only about 5 percent of the energy they receive into light.”

About a fifth of the average U.S. home’s electricity costs pays for lighting, which means even if CFLs initially cost more than conventional lightbulbs, consumers will save, Jones said.

A 20-watt CFL gives as much light as a 75-watt conventional bulb, and lasts 13 times longer, according to the Rocky Mountain Institute, a nonprofit group studying energy issues.

[...] The environmentalleader.com posted today that a California Assemblyman will introduce a bill to ban incandescent lightbulbs. Groovy Green reports that incandescent light bulbs are very inefficient – wasting up to 95% of the energy used to make their light and with the average household spending around a fifth of their electrical bill on lighting, changing to more energy efficient light bulbs could have a huge impact. Great, my choices will be reduced even further. What about people who don’t like the greenish light from CFL’s? What about photographers, who have to choose the type of lighting they want for their shots? This is crap, if consumers want to use CFL’s, they will. I personally have them in most of the fixtures in my home, but i still use incandesents at my desk, because the light is more natural, and its not on alot at my desk. When the government starts mandating things, prices will rise, choices will fall, and I can gaurentee more enregy/money will be wasted by the government than what is saved by the bulbs. People have the right to choose what kind of light they want, geez, what is this world coming to?!? Lets face it, they arent doing this because they care about the envrionment, because the mecury (in the CFL’s) will be sitting around long after the politicians are dead, they are just doing it for their voting record, and to give the governemnt even more control over your life. Why choose, when you can have a small group of ’smarter’ people choose for you?

Oh by the way, Flourecent lightbulbs cause females to develop at a faster rate (because of the pulses in light). Research it if you don’t believe me.

Will the legislation apply to other forms of lighting (non-home) such as beacon alarm lights? If not this time, are they a future candidate?
