Death to the Hummer?

hummer stop

GM CEO Rick Wagoner announced today that GM would be closing 4 truck and SUV plants in North America due to the rising cost of fuel, and decreased demand for trucks and SUVs.

Among the casualties? The “iconic Hummer”.

CEO Rick Wagoner said Tuesday before the automaker’s annual meeting in Delaware the plants to be closed are in Oshawa, Ontario; Moraine, Ohio; Janesville, Wis.; and Toluca, Mexico. He also said the iconic Hummer brand may be discontinued.

In more promising news for GM…

Wagoner said the GM board has approved production of a new small Chevrolet car at a plant in Lordstown, Ohio, in mid-2010 and the Chevy Volt electric vehicle in Detroit.

From the point of view of the GM employees being laid off as part of this, I am sad for them (Oshawa, ON is very close to Toronto, ON (my home city)). From the vantage point of getting GM to get rid of overly large, wasteful vehicles, I applaud their action (though very late in the actual race).

Interesting, because wasn’t it a year ago that they talked about making the Hummer “green”? (HA) I also wonder if by “discontinued” they only mean “to be sold” as some reports have said, which would mean that the brand would continue somewhere else.
