The Smart Car Has Arrived

smartcar.jpgThis week the Smart Car landed on US soil in earnest. That’s good news for the more than 30,000 people who put down a deposit for the right to buy this newly available alternative to the ginormous SUVs that have been deployed onto American roads over the past decade and a half. Sure these tiny cars are no match for a hummer in a head on collision, but just how long will those civilian tanks continue to operate in large numbers in light of rising prices at the pump? Groovy Green predicts this week’s arrival of the Smart Car marks the peak in vehicle size in America!

The Smart Fortwo Passion has a steel safety cage and four air bags as well as a standard electronic stability control system. It also gets 33 MPG city and 41 MPG highway. While the gas mileage isn’t spectacular, the price- $12,000 to start/$17,000 fully loaded, might be an even bigger reason for recession-worried Americans to take a hard look at these vehicles as a double hedge against future economic uncertainty.

How long before Smart Cars become hip might depend on who drives one to the Oscars. We’re hoping Tommy Lee Jones.

I got to test drive one the other day! It was AMAZING! I loved that they’re automatic but you can also shift to reduce the delay in the engine. Stability control was also incredible, my car doesn’t have that, so to not feel a pull on turns was kinda weird at first. The paddle shifters on the sterring wheel took a minute to get used to, but there’s a awesome lil thing in the dash that tells you when to shift! AMAZING! I can’t wait to get one! BLAAAAAAH!!!!

I saw one for the first time in Dallas. It was weaving between an Escalade and a BMW 7 series. It was an odd, but encouraging site.
