China’s attempts to kill the earth by mimicing the developed world

the-last-empire-320.jpgMother Jones has an absolutely fascinating, although thoroughly depressing, story about China and the environmental destruction that is being wrought in China. Some of this destruction is at the hands of Chinese for Chinese consumers, but a lot is for Americans among other consumers.

The statistics on their consumption is so overwhelming that it is actually compiled into a separate list. A few of them are:

China is

  • The world’s largest consumer of coal, grain, fertilizer, cell phones, refrigerators, and televisions
  • The leading importer of iron ore, steel, copper, tin, zinc, aluminum, and nickel
  • The top producer of coal, steel, cement, and 10 kinds of metal
  • The No. 1 importer of illegally logged wood
  • The third-largest producer of cars after Japan and the United States; by 2015, it could be the world’s largest car producer. By 2020, there could be 130 million cars on its roads, compared to 33 million now.

I can’t urge you enough to follow the link over to the story and read it. It’s 5 pages and it’s very detailed, but it is an amazing piece of work.
