When Denise Cooperman client’s called upon her services as an interior designer, they often faced a difficult issue: What to do with all of their old, perfectly fine furniture? “People were frustrated,” Cooperman said in an interview with Groovy. “They didn’t want to go through the hassle of using classifieds or having people come visit their home. Nor did they want to simply trash items or put them out on the street.” The end result in some cases was either to send it to the garage or off to the auction house. But Cooperman had a better idea.
At the end of last Summer, Denise launched the website UsedFurnitureFindex – a massive online clearing house of used furniture that anyone can take advantage of. Instead of buying something new and wasting resources, users of the site can browse through a rapidly growing selection of beautiful furniture for sale. Unlike Ebay, these are not auctions. Even better, the site caters exclusively to furniture and can narrow searches based on measurements, condition, quality, or even style. The simple listing fee of $5 even covers up to four high-res photos so you can get down to the details quickly.
“It provides a more direct interaction between seller and buyer than traditional methods,” said Cooperman. “We’re really trying to encourage this is as a place where people can recycle used furniture, and reduce waste. It’s also about sharing a connection with what they’re selling.” As the site mentions,
“If you are selling your furniture, UsedFurnitureFindex may be the perfect place to wax poetic about your treasured belongings. You can show pictures and write as much as you want about your furniture, once loved. Tell a story. UsedFurnitureFindex should be easy to use and affords more dignity than the typical advertising medium. In fact, we hope this site will become the ultimate in searching for new home furnishings, once loved.”
In addition to regular folk, Denise has also formed relationships with warehouses that stock surplus new furniture. Most of these items would simply sit in these locations for years – but Denise is giving such stock access to a new audience. “I’ve even taken items out of the trash, repaired and repainted, and put them up on the site for sale. Putting only a small amount of effort into items slated for the dump produces amazing results.”
For those that simply love to browse, Denise has also come up with an area wherer someone can collect favorite findings in a want list that can be saved and a wish list area for items they wish to have with the hope someone will be selling that soon. Very cool.
Of course, we at Groovy are very much supportive of the whole reduce, reuse, recycle trend. UsedFurnitureFindex.com is a perfect example of this concept in action. They even provide local listings of companies that can assist you in breathing new life into your used purchases.
Just head on over to their site and take a look! Support local used goods! Save money — and take advantage of some beautiful items that might otherwise be cast aside.
