Wal-Mart announced that they are going to start selling their own private label brand of compact fluorescent light bulbs. They expect they will be able to sell 4 bulbs for the price of 3.
As far as I can see this can only be good. One of the largest hurdles to the rapid adoption of CFLs is the initial high cost. Wal-Mart has started to take care of that problem.
Personally I can’t figure out why the initial cost is such a huge deal. Even someone who can do simple math can tell that you can save some serious cash by changing out your light bulbs. If you have a hard time affording CFLs then buy a pack each time a regular bulb burns out. Just replace each bulb as they expire with a CFL. This will spread our the higher upfront cost over time so you won’t necessarily feel the cost difference.
With the huge reach that Wal-Mart has even simple things they can do to bring awareness to their customers can potentially have a very large impact.
