In The Fight Against Air Pollution, Some Plants Make Excellent Weapons

PF06.jpgWhile there no doubts that air pollution is bad for respiration, there are very little actions we can take to deal with it. Modern buildings often come equipped with air filtration technology, but what should you do if your home or office is less than ideal? Thankfully, there are some plants that do a heck of a job at filtering and sucking up these pollutants — while also providing some natural greenery to your living space. The UK Telegraph had an excellent post earlier this morning that listed some of the best plants as allies in the war on air pollution. Here are some of the highlights:

“One of the most efficient pollutant removers is the dragon tree (Dracaena), which may explain why its spiky variegated leaves on a tall central stem are so often seen in offices. It’s easy to care for, reaching 8ft in ideal conditions (rich soil, warmth, light shade and sparse watering, preferably not from old coffee cups).”

“The goosefoot plant (Syngonium podophyllum), with its gloriously mottled and marbled leaves, is also extremely effective against all forms of air pollution – it needs a temperature of 60F (15C) and does best in bright, indirect light and a moist, loam-based soil.”

The article also mentions that the common spider plant is excellent at removing formaldehyde and the emissions from computer terminals. If you find yourself in the office seated in front of a screen most of the day, this guy could be a nice compliment. From damp room, or rooms that are drying out from flooding, Ivy has been found to be effective at removing almost 80% of airborne mold and fungus spores. Yummy.

I have a Dragon Trees – one at work and one at home and love them. Although mine need a lot of watering but they are in a sunny area. We have a Spider Plant at home too but I don’t like the look of it – but now I know it’s good for me I’m a bit happier about it – thanks!

Plants are evil, like CO2. I won’t have anything to do with something that “lives” on CO2. CO2 is a pollutant don’t forget according to EnvironMENTALism.

You cannot possibly be serious, plants are evil? Anything that lives on co2, cmon SERIOUSLY. That has to be the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. Humans expell co2, and what do you thing eats it up. Plants trees, etc, Please please … PUHLEASE tell me there was sarcasm in that statement. If not you just might have to be nominated for darwin award of the year as well as dumb ass of the year.
