The Sun Sets On Global Warming Caused By Solar Activity

snipshot_e4pscr4gj4d.jpgYou know that theory floating around by people consistently looking for ways to derail the idea of climate change by saying the sun is causing the warming? If you’re not familiar, basically the idea is that the sun is burning more intensely the last 100 years or so than ever before. Ergo, the Earth is getting hotter from this intense radiation than from anything to do with Global Warming. Neat idea, but according to a new report released by scientists today, it’s just a bunch of hot air. From the article,

“But solar physicists based in the UK at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxfordshire and the University of Southampton, alongside Claus Froehlich of the World Radiation Centre in Switzerland, found that while solar activity may have played a part in climate change in the first half of the twentieth-century, it is not driving the recent warming.

After studying all available solar data for the past 100 years, the scientists recorded no correlation between total solar radiation, the number of sun spots or cosmic ray intensity and global warming since 1985. ‘The temperature record is simply not consistent with any of the solar forcings that people are talking about,’ said lead author Mike Lockwood of Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. And from the report: ‘Our results show that the observed rapid rise in global mean temperatures seen after 1985 cannot be ascribed to solar variability.’”

But once again, even though this information is coming from specialists in the field, we should still spend time debating whether its all true or not. So, go on, debate.

    This is another case where the media hasn’t looked that hard at the evidence;
    Dr Lockwood says that if there was a lag ‘begin to see the rise in global temperatures slowing down’ RE: http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/story/0,,2123447,00.html
    Which is what we have seen since 2000 http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/research/hadleycentre/CR_data/Monthly/HadCRUGNS_3plots.gif.

    To suggest this thesis is wrong is to not look at the evidence. Which if you look here
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Solar-cycle-data.png
    You’ll see total irradiance stayed the same.

    As for thermal lag, see here http://www.newscientist.com/article.ns?id=dn7161

    Also on lags, there is the 800 year lag between temperature rise and carbon dioxide which is a massive blow to the greenhouse theory.

    So this still a real and viable theory.
