Lexus Loses Claim That SUVs Are Eco-Friendly, Low In Emissions

snipshot_e4189wewn3t6.jpgWell, here’s a shocker. Apparently, luxury car maker Lexus made claims in a new ad for their RX400h that a four-wheel drive sports utility vehicle was environmentally friendly. The magazine campaign headlined with: “High performance. Low emissions. Zero guilt.”

The ad campaign, which ran in the UK, sparked multiple complaints to the watchdog group, The Advertising Standards Authority. Many argued that the ad misleadingly implied that the car caused little or no harm to the environment. From the article,

” Lexus argued that within its particular category – SUV vehicles – the RX 400h had very low emissions, hence the claim. The ASA agreed with this claim by Lexus. However, the watchdog added that the headline was misleading because it implied, incorrectly, that the vehicle’s emissions were low in comparison with all vehicles and that therefore the SUV caused little or no harm to the environment.

It ruled that Lexus could not make such comparisons and claims of environmental friendliness in future car ads if they could not be proved.”

Whoops! Nice try though guys….

It does seem to me that Lexus was harshly treated on this account. The watchdog is bowing to the pressure of the green lobby on this one.
