Earth Day in the Bay Area

It’s Friday which means the start of the weekend!  This weekend is especially special as we all know Sunday is Earth Day!  If you happen to be in San Francisco here is a list of things taking place in celebration of Earth Day:

 Saturday

The Green Apple Festival is three days long.  It’s the largest Earth Day celebration taking place in three cities:  NYC-Chicago-San Francisco.

Earth Day at the San Francisco Zoo.  Our newly renovated zoo will be having their biggest Earth Day event ever!  There’s going to be lots of interactive activities to promote animal awareness and other eco-friendly organizations will be on site to show you what it takes to be an eco-citizen.  They will also be hosting drop-off sites for batteries, cellphones, and other unused items!

Berkeley Earth Day! The annual Earth Day celebration will be held at the Civic Center Park on Saturday from noon to 5pm.  There will be speakers, performers, and lots of community groups on hand to help promote the environmental movement.

The city of Alameda will be having an event that allows you to drop off any unwanted medication (mark out personal info) and mercury thermometers.  Make sure the thermometers are sealed in plastic bags and you can get a digital thermometer in exchange for free.  This event is Saturday from 11am to 4pm at Washington Park.  Also in Alameda at the Crab Cove Visitor center from 11am to 4pm will be music, games, beach clean-up and more!

Bring the kids to this one!  Penguins in the Park: bring your picnics and blankets to an outdoor showing of Happy Feet at Dolores Park in San Francisco.  This event takes place from 4pm to 10pm.  The movie will begin at 7:30pm, but come early for all the activities including a Happy Feet Dance instruction!  Plus, bring an incandescent light bulb in exchange for a CFL while supplies last.  Lawn seating only please don’t bring any chairs.

The Cherry Blossom Festival will also be taking place in Japantown.  There will be arts and crafts and of course great international food!

Everywhere around the Bay Area will be Earth Day 2007 Restoration.  Each city or neighborhood (even my tiny neighborhood is participating)will be cleaning up local parks and beaches.  Check the Events section of SFGate.com for more info.

Sunday

Pier 39 will be abuzz on Sunday.  Aquarium of the Bay will be hosting their first EarthFest from 12noon to 4pm.  There will be booths, music, and activities showing you how easy it is to be green.  This event is free to the public!

Happy Earth Day!

Great effort toward Earth Day 2007! Inspiring to see events all over the country.

For those that could not make an event, but still want to make an Earth Day (everyday) contribution, and support the Bay Area as well.. this company’s home there!
