You may have seen the recent Magazine article published relating to the Subprime housing market and wondered why is that important to an environmental website? There are myriad reasons, but the biggest of which is the understanding that any economic difficulties that our country experiences from this market meltdown over the next few years directly impacts our country’s ability to make green changes to our lifestyle, and address all the issues in front of us. An economy in recession or depression has less capital to expend to make the necessary changes and preparations for the future. Combine these economic challenges with the upcoming oil challenges we are sure to experience and the result appears to be great difficulty for us in the future. Incorporating all the different aspects of the “green” initiative when you understand how the American economy works and what factors drive the economy forward will hopefully allow you to make more informed decisions.![]()
In retrospect we can see the incredible amounts of waste produced by our society’s focus on housing as our economic driving force. Both in building suburbia as well as in transportation costs and the drive to a mass produced low cost way of life. We can see the cost to our world of a focus on independent, carefree living detached from the world around us. An understanding of these economic and environmental impacts will hopefully also allow you to see how frail the American way of life is and see how dependent it is on cheap oil, mass produced goods and an overall disregard for the world around us. As James Kunstler has said “The building of suburban America will prove to be the biggest misallocation of resources in the history of the world.” Maybe he’s right, maybe he’s wrong. But before we start analyzing what is happening around us we have to spend some time in reflection and research and learn about how things actually work, not how they are portrayed to work. This series of articles is our attempt at explaining how interconnected the economic world is so that you can be properly prepared and ready to respond and make changes as necessary.

“Socialism failed because it couldn’t tell the economic truth; capitalism may fail because it couldn’t tell the ecological truth.” Lester Brown
