Replace South Central Farm – On Top of Warehouse?

This is a meme that I’d like to keep going. It is a great idea and a solution to the battle over a field in South Central LA, which Daryl Hannah and others, recently lost.

Jeff at sustainablog, via one of his many brilliant commenters, came up with this:

If he’s building a warehouse, why not simply build up a stronger roof and have it be an earth roof where they can continue farming? Is that in some way illegal? That way you get the warehouse AND you get the farms. So what if you have to walk up a flight of stairs before you get there? Warehouse roofs are flat, cover it over with two feet of good earth and then plant away. Irrigation isn’t a problem either. Just run lines from the water supply of the building. Put in meters. Done deal. In fact, I think more warehouses ought to be built with stronger roofs for precisely this reason. Can’t they be retrofitted?

What a wonderful idea! Not sure how the city planners and architects would feel about its feasibility, but if it could clear those hurdles, I am sure the positive publicity would pay for itself. Or, perhaps, the hundreds of people rallying around the farm could donate for the upgrades/insurance necessary.

Now if only someone we knew worked for a “larger online magazine” and could spread this idea to thousands of others… heh.

Thanks, Steve. I’ll run the idea by that other, larger green online magazine…
