If you’ve been a reader of Groovy Green for a little while you might remember a challenge that happened this past fall between Aaron and myself. We were challenging ourselves to see who could collect the most bags of leaves for use in our gardens. The purpose of the leaves is to create more organic material in the ground to encourage even more organism activity in our gardens and grow bigger, better and more tasty produce. And don’t forget the benefit of using them to mulch the beds to keep weeds down. (Click here and here for the articles about the challenge. Make sure to read the running log of the number of bags obtained.)
Well, the challenge is over, although in reality it’s been over for a while. Aaron smoked me. He ended up with 317 bags and I only got 209 bags. (In my defense, I didn’t have any siblings helping me…but I digress…)
The last part of the challenge remains though. We agreed that the person who “lost” the challenge (in reality nobody lost because we have so many great, useful leaves) would have to do some kind of activity as nominated by the readers. Unfortunately I don’t think there has been any submissions to date. So if you want to weigh in and determine what I would have to do for losing the challenge drop us a comment. We’ll decide on the
most appropriate choice and have a follow-up article discussing it. I’ll even submit the first option: Matt has to stand outside the local shopping mall wearing a placard that touts the Groovy Green website and the “Start Today: Save Tomorrow” logo. With pictures.
Now, let’s see some comments!
Final tally: 526 bags of leaves collected (ie, 26,300 gallons of leaves, roughly)
I tried to figure out a way to quantify this in weight but short of weighing a bag in very cold weather I couldn’t figure out how to make it happen. I’m open to suggestions if you have any.

I think that instead of the placard, it should be a leaf bag with arms and a head hole cut out in it. And somewhere it should have to mention that Aaron Rules on it. heh heh.
I know, I know, I should keep my (3 bags) trap shut!

I applaud both of you! That is a lot of leaves.
I like the idea of the leafbag outfit in front of the Mall handing out information about the Website along with
“Green Living” and “Eating Locally”.
I enjoy reading all the updates and not just Matthew’s.
Keep up the great work!!

No wonder Matt is tough. His own mother weighs in to support Matt wearing leaves at the mall. Personally that scares me a bit. What if I lose next year?
If that ends up being the price you pay Matt, I would love video (Michael might help edit) or at very least some photos.

I think the loser should have to sacrifice some other bit of consumption they are fond of for a short while – a useful experiment in going without. Then, you and Aaron can have another manly challenge “who can get rid of the maximum number of household appliances?” I’m pretty sure you might win, Matt, since I know Jennifer won’t be volunteering to give up her vacuum cleaner
.
